
Approximately 35 years after the fact, the state of North Carolina is coming to grips with its dark history of forced sterilization. Although many states in the U.S. had varying forms of eugenics programs during the early 1900′s, most of those programs were abandoned post-World War II, because of the negative associations with Nazi Germany’s efforts at racial purity. However, unlike most states, North Carolina not only continued itsprogram of forced sterilization, it expanded its program until the early 1960′s.
