Illegal fishing threaten Sri Lanka livelihoods

Uploaded by on Sep 24, 2011

Sri Lanka has said that it loses more than $50m a year due to poaching by Indian fishermen.

The problem is crippling the country's local fisheries, particularly in the Northern and Eastern parts of the country.

Meanwhile, India has said that the issue is being discussed by a Joint Working Group between the two countries.

Aljazeera has shot exclusive photos of Indian trawlers fishing just 4km off the Sri Lankan coast.

Minelle Fernandez reports from Pesalai in north west Sri Lanka.
